Yesterday, I wrote a post about Google Snatch, again. I pointed out a few websites in the Google results that I designated jackpot sites. These are sites that are free for anyone to sign up for, their domains rank high in the search engines, and new content is spidered relatively quickly. Using sites like these is the easiest way to start. It costs nothing except time. It is a place to get your feet wet and see if you like affiliate marketing. And it can make you pretty good money.

If you are wondering why I am writing about bum marketing on a site I pay to host, it’s about flexibility, control, and a place to call home. But I still use bum marketing, mainly to test or as a funnel. You may have reached me through a Squidoo page. I am new to Squidoo and am testing it out, gradually now, when I get the time.

In it’s very simplest form, it ‘s article marketing. I guess it gets the "bum" from the fact that you are using other people websites to host your articles. And you link directly to affiliate products through the articles that you write. There are many highly ranked sites on the internet that do nothing except host articles. Buy choosing a highly targeted title and writing a good article, you can rank pretty high in the search engines.

Ranking high in search engines is the key to making sales through your bum marketing efforts. The sites that are used in bum marketing have done all of this work for you. The other users and the site owner themselves have a stake in making the site as a whole rank high. When you put your page or article in the mix, you benefit from this high ranking.

Does this mean that you shouldn’t do some promotion yourself? No. Do anything you can. My biggest stumbling block before I moved to actually making money through affiliate programs was assuming I had done enough, then sit back and wait and move onto the next thing. Once I learned to focus on what I was doing until I actually saw results, then I starting seeing more results. In other words, this business is not for the lazy or the flighty. There are others out there who have been doing this longer who can afford to slack off a little. If you want to compete, you have to be stubborn.

For those of you who are complete newbies or have yet to make real money, I would suggest picking a place like WordPress.com or Squidoo as a base of operations. A lot of the articles on bum marketing out there suggest to write articles and post them to article sites and then move onto the next product. These articles would use your Clickbank hoplink. I suggest building a permanent page or blog and then link from articles and forum signatures to your page or blog. This way each of your actions is not a throw away action. It builds pagerank and links to your base page or site.

Do a run through on the Clickbank Marketplace. After you have decided what kind of affiliate products to promote, search the Clickbank Marketplace for products related to what you know you can write about. Then take the name of the product and do a search in Google. Try to spot your own Jackpot sites. While I have pointed out a few general ones that work for any subject like Squidoo, WordPress, and Blogspot, you may find other ones specifically related to the niche you choose. Make note of these.

Now you need to decide how much time you have to devote to doing this. I work full time as an webmaster for a ecommerce company, have a wife and two kids, and run two blogs plus Adwords campaigns. It takes dedication and some late nights but I get it done. If you don’t have time to do it daily, I would not choose a blog. I would chose a place like Squidoo where you can create new pages for each new subject you cover. If you start a blog and get subscribers, you kind of have to follow through with almost daily content. If you are regular subscribe here, how do you feel when a day goes by and I haven’t written something new for you to read.

And that is enough for now. Find your subject matter. Find a few Clickbank products to promote. Search for them on Google to find which sites rank high. Explore Squidoo and play around with the interface a little. And just to let you know, this is not the only technique I will be teaching here. It is just the easiest and cheapest way to begin.
