Some Adwords Misconceptions and Lessons
November 6, 2007
I don’t know if most of these are still misconceptions, but when I learned to use Adwords to promote affiliate products they were I few things I learned from articles, forums and ebooks that I had to unlearn in order to make a profit. About half of my Clickbank sales come directly from PPC. For those of you trying Adwords outs some of these tips may help you on your way.
- Every keyword is the same. Some keywords I have bid $0.05 on. Others, I have set my maximum bid at $100, which is the maximum Adwords allows. It depends on the keyword you are using. And no, I would have never made any money if the bids would have gone that high. I was just guaranteeing #1 position and knew that the little drops in ROI were caused by newbies testing the waters. I only do the $100 bid rarely and the daily budget will save my ass, just in case.
- Start an Adgroup and then break up the keywords in different groups to insure maximum click through rate. I start only with exact and phrase matches in one adgroup. If that turns profitable, I create another one designed for content bids and broader keywords that won’t get as high CTR, but still worth creating.
- Direct to affiliate links is better. Using a landing page is better. I do both. It depends on the time I have. I usually start with a direct affiliate link and then creating a landing page. Direct affiliate links do take more baby sitting but the Adwords campain optimizer has shortened the amount of babysitting time.
- You can make $1000 a day using an Excel spreadsheet to track your ROI. This was the bottleneck in my old system. It took too much time to copy and paste everything. I now have a system I wrote where I click a button and my stats from Clickbank and Adwords are imported and ROI calculated. You may be able to make this much with a spreadsheet for calculations, but only if you don’t have another job like I do. I get about 15 to 16 hours a week to blog at two blogs, keep Adwords running, stay active in social networks, and do some SEO based affiliate marketing. It is likely that will change if current trends stay the way they are. Yesterday’s profit was around $700.
Well, that’s all for now. And for those of you trying to spy on my campaigns. Yes, I watch my stats. And this is not the right domain. I think those keyword spying tools are the refuge of the lazy. Find your own products. I have been doing this too long to expose everything.
