How to Create Your Own Long Tail Phrases
April 30, 2008
I learned to do this when I was promoting adware and spyware removers against heavy PPC competition. I made a good profit and my campaign ran for over a year without having to tweak it much because for most of the keywords I was using, there was no competition. It was during the time when Adwords had a minimum bid too. This was also during the time a lot of free quality spyware removers were becoming available.
It starts with a concept and the concept is this: people tend to use the same words and speech patterns when they are talking about similar items.
If you have a blog about autos and one of the phrases a visitor used to find your site is "change the brakes on a 1995 Firebird" chances are someone else has used the phrase "change the brakes on a 2001 Eldorado".
What did we do there? Just change two of the words in the phrase. So theoretically, if we took a list of years and a list of car models and a tool like Keyword Lizard you could build a list of phrases.
But do you stop there? Look a little deeper and think about it a little more. People also use 95 instead of 1995 sometimes. They also might add the make to the model of the car using "Pontiac Firebird" instead of "Firebird".
Not done yet. How many ways can you say "change the brakes"? You could use "fix my brakes" and much more.
Even further. Sometimes people type one phrase in, don’t find anything, and add keywords at the end of their current phrase. So some might be using "1995 Eldorado brakes repair".
With the spyware and adware list I was building, my list constantly grew. I had my list of phrase patterns and every day new spyware would be released. So about every week or so, I would add hundreds of new key phrases to my campaign. Niches like these are pretty nice.
So how to you come up with combinations?
- Try to find the most popular searched base keyword first. With my spyware campaign, I chose the spyware that caused the most problems for people. With the brakes example, I would find a popular model of cars.
- Take that base keyword and pump it into a keyword tool. With spyware, I just used the name of the spyware or even "spyware" itself because that potentially will give you the most phrases. With the brakes example, I would put the model and "brakes". You want the phrase you use to find these words as minimal as possible but you don’t want too much noise. If you used just the model of the car, no telling all the keywords you would come up with that would not help you.
- Then you take the list you get from your chosen keyword tool and look for the keywords you can multiply and mix.
- Find or create generic lists of mixable words. Mix them. Find synonym’s for your mixable words and mix those also.
- If you have a list that grows like the spyware example, movies, music, videos, you may want to create a list of phrases with the initial seed word replaced by XXXXX. That way for each new seed word you use, you can open the file in notepad and used Find & Replace to replace the XXXXX with the new seed word.
- Also if you have a list that grow like this, it’s good to find a source of news for the category. For spyware, find a site that lists all new spyware discover. For games, find a site that lists all new and upcoming releases.
Now for an example using spyware. I used Overture at one time for this process, but it seems that the tool is off and on these days, so I went to Keyword Elite which I purchased a few years ago and it’s one of the best investments I have made.
So from my "spyware" query, I get these words:
- remover
- removal
- remove
- anti
- protection
- how to remove
- uninstall
- removal tool
- scan
- guard
- removal of
- online removal
- delete
- online scan
- removal program
- removing
Now if I pick a common spyware like Cydoor, I can add these terms:
- adware
- spyware
- spyware remover
- killer
- dummy file
- limewire
- kazaa
- how can I get rid of
- how do I remove
- how to delete
Looking at those terms and extrapolating, I can add these:
- get rid of
- adware remover
- how do I uninstall
- how to remove
- And on and on…
And then to find a site that updates it’s list of the latest and greatest spyware.
And that’s about it. Once you get the hand of this, you will find long tail phrases everywhere.
