How Many Types of Review Sites Are There

One of the advantages of the the internet is that as an internet user, you have a larger peer group to get information from. If you are thinking of trying a product or service, you can usually find a review a Google search away.
Product Review Site
This is my review site of choice. I guess I worked way too many retail jobs in my life. And I specialize in reviewing downloadable products like ebooks and software. I haven’t written as many reviews as I could in the past because I try software all the time. If I am looking for a specific tool of some type, I might try 4 or 5 similar programs before finding the type I like. If I had only noted the features and benefits I liked and disliked, I would already have enough content to flesh out 4 or 5 review sites.
But downloadable products are not the only products you can review. Online, you can find review blogs dedicated to food, to
Location Review Site
Yelp may think they corner the market on this type of site, but I am here to tell you there is still room for growth. And I say grow local. A local review site can come close to encompassing all of these other types of review sites. Just keep adding to it. And I know personally of a few local resort area review sites that outrank any national or worldwide reivew sites or social networks and they make good money doing it. People like to know what they are in for before they go places, whether on vacation or in their home town.
Service Review Site
Who does the best work on Ford cars in your city? How does this house painting service rate against it’s competitors? Where can I get the best value?
People can really on branding and the fact that the Sony TV you buy in Chicago will be the same Sony TV you can buy in LA when they are looking for a product. But when you are looking for a service, you may have to do some research to find the best value for your money. Here is where service review sites come in.
Entertainment Review Site
A big, big category that is probably pretty crowded unless you want a really focused entertainment niche blog or a prepared to put in some work. I scraped some keywords based off of “review” to write this post just to get an idea of what people were searching for. The second most common keyword combined with “reviews” was “movies” right after “2009″. But entertainment can be anything from movies to music to plays to resorts. And movie and music reviews are very dependent on newness.
Some review sites are more for a demographic or from specific people in general. There are people searching for kids review sites, christian review sites and student review sites. And some people are just searching for feedback from the general public using these words: user reviews, consumer reviews. And some people search for trusted, professional, good, or top reviews even though Google is not a judge of character.
Not all review sites fit in one of these categories. Some may fit in more than one. Here are some keywords I ran into with my keyword tool that may give you even more ideas for review sites:
University Reviews
Diet Reviews
Anything you question before you buy or use could be a topic for a review site. Now that we have looked at a few types, I hope to write the next few posts explaining how you can make money off of these various types of review sites.

Sometimes I think we have too many review options
But as consumer – I always try to locate information on what other people have to say about product.
So, Bring It On!

I so hate yelp. We’ve worked hard to establish a good reputation, but yelp intentionally seems to promote negative reviews to the top…event when they are from people that do not live in the area. If anyone has any advice about changing that I’d love to hear it.
Thanks,
JB
I remembered my experience when I was trying to find out the user opinion to a washing machine I was planning to buy. Needless to say I was swamped in Entertainment news and reviews of cell phones of the same company. That was highly annoying.
Review sites are good, even for criticism, We can produce better and better contents and products. “yelp intentionally seems to promote negative reviews to the top” this is exceptional case, over all according to me I have learnt lot of things from review sites.
Most consumers are faced with the issues of relevance and credibility when they search using major search engines and review sites. There are either too many irrelevant results, or they don’t know which review to trust. Social Raves (www.socialraves.com) lets consumers extend their social networks into a platform where they can share their experiences about local businesses with friends, and vice-versa. The intent is to help consumers build their own personalized, authentic, and reliable reference source on great local brands and businesses through the recommendations of family and friends. Who better to make credible and relevant recommendations to you than the people who know you?
Then of course there are the review/giveaway sites which walk the fine line between trying to maintain honest reviews, while working directly with PR reps and companies
I was looking for websites that do reviews of actual websites, but this was still a good piece.
I can not stand review sites. The only people who bother to set up accounts for reviews are angry costumers out to ruine a good business. With lies and fake stories about their up tight experiences. And their day was ruined by their own quirks. Don’t believe every thing you read. The crazies have Internet access too.
